HOME SCHOOLING FOR ADHD CHILD

Tags: adhd child home schooling, homeschooling a child with adhd, homeschooling children with adhd

ADHD child is no ordinary child. Disciplining and teaching an ADHD child is not an easy job for a non professional. Parents of ADHD child sometimes are their selves so confused, that at times they seem knocked out.

When parents of such special children consult me there is a long list of why, how, when, who and more they ask. One common question apart from medications is about homeschooling children with ADHD.

Generally children suffering from ADHD are from 3-5 years of age, which is preschool age and they need homeschooling at that age.

An ADHD child home schooling can make you go nuts. Unlike other children he needs more time, more effort, more patience and more attention to grasp a simple thing. It’s like teaching a child how to brush your hair, which you usually don’t teach them.

An ADHD child is too much demanding, in fact. Homeschooling a child with ADHD need special guts, and here are few things for parents, teachers and nannies to help these children.

1. BE PATIENT:

An ADHD child is “ATTENTION DEFICIENT HYPERACTIVE CHILD” and you know that. So be mentally prepared for someone who is difficult to make sit, what to talk of teaching.

But you should not forget that it’s not his fault. And you are doing this effort for his betterment. Now hold your breath and get started.

2. PRE TEACHING EXTRAVAGANZA:

What is this? It’s fun. First give him a good diet therapy meal, let him play for an hour, take him to wash room and when everything is done and he has no excuses left, ask him now it’s time to study.

3. WHAT TO TEACH FIRST:

Teach him first the thing he dislikes most. I know he dislikes everything regarding study but I said “dislikes most”. So by the end when he is about to run, he knows that a better thing is there, it will make him sit.

In some cases this acts oppositely. The child gets fed up with the boring start and runs away. You have to see what best suits him.

4. FIRST GET HIM GOOD AT ORAL STUDIES:

Most of the children with ADHD also suffer with dyslexia and other learning disorders. They confuse between similar looking letters like b,d,p,q,l,t,m,n. So first make them learn orally and when they are good at it, then teach them to write.

5. USE UNCONVENTIONAL METHODS:

A copy, pencil, rubber, sharpener and a book won’t work here. Believe me they don’t!!! Try using educational blocks, white boards, markers, crayons, plaster chine, play dough, game tiles and coloring books.

Try learning about the medium your child loves most. Teach him mathematics with practical things like grains for addition and subtraction. Balls, fruits, color pencils, anything that is countable.

6. DON’T FORGET TO GIVE A REWARD DAILY:

A prize, a gift or a reward in any form is always appreciated by everyone. This will help your child to come to study on his own. He won’t run away that frequently. And please…. NO FALSE PROMISES TO HIM or all your effort will be gone.

Hope you’ll find these tips practical enough to get started. Happy Parenting!!!!! (more on parenting child with ADHD)
